Electric Arc Furnaces: Types & Comparison

Three Kinds of Electric Arc Furnaces

Traditional top charging electric furnace, simple equipment, less investment in land area, flexible and simple operation, but its production process is not continuous, heat loss is large, the impact on the environment is large. Theoretically, the single furnace smelting cycle is 60min, electricity consumption is 400kWh/t, and electrode consumption is 2.0kg/t.

Horizontal continuous charging electric furnace with scrap preheating function, high energy efficiency. The average furnace smelting cycle is 38-45min, electricity consumption is 320-350kWh/t, electrode consumption is 0.9-1.4kg/t. The problems are relatively low preheating temperature of scrap, large air leakage in preheating channel, short life of continuous charging chute and clogging of feeding chute.

Quantum electric furnace has lower smelting cost and higher production efficiency than the first two electric furnaces. The scrap chute is equipped with lifting system, siphon type slagless steel discharge, flexible furnace shell installation, tilting and replacement, innovative exhaust gas treatment system, and less pollution. Theoretical single furnace smelting cycle is 35min, electricity consumption is 280kWh/t, and electrode consumption is 0.9kg/t.

The arrangement of three kinds of electric furnaces, top charging electric arc furnace covers the least area, quantum electric furnace arrangement requires a certain height and plane, covers the largest area. The quantum electric furnace has the highest comprehensive investment, but its advantages of low smelting cost and high production efficiency is clear if the steel plant works long-term basis.
