Q&A 200: Steel Making Deoxidation

Q: Why does the molten steel need to be deoxidized?

A: If the molten steel is not deoxidized, the continuous casting billet will not have the correct solidification structure. High oxygen content in steel will also produce subcutaneous bubbles, loosening and other defects, and intensify the harmful effects of sulfur. Generated oxide inclusions remain in the steel, will reduce the plasticity of steel, impact toughness and other mechanical properties. Therefore, it’s necessary to remove excess oxygen in the steel.
