Foreign scholars and enterprises have done a lot of research on the application of biomass in electric arc furnace steelmaking sector, the main research direction is to use biomass as carburizing agent and blowing agent in EAF smelting process.
Based on the current research, it can be found that there are two main problems in the foaming slag by spraying biomass or biochar. The first question is that the excessive reactivity leads to instantaneous combustion in the furnace, which affects the foaming of slag; The second problem is that the surface of biomass or biochar is smooth, resulting in poor wettability with slag, which affects its reduction reaction with iron oxide. In order to deal with the first problem, we can consider injecting the spray gun under the slag surface. For the second problem, we are trying to pretreat the way to directly or indirectly increase the wettability of biomass or biochar and slag.
Under the background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, China’s steel industry is challenging a difficult task of carbon emission reduction. It will be great significance if a large amount of corn, rice and other straw and forestry waste can be utilized as new carbon source of the EAF steelmaking process.
