Effective on 1st of July 2016 SME Group will be the new owner of the Schwarzmüller Inverter (SMI) business unit, in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Schwarzmüller Inverter (SMI) designs, manufactures and sells inverters to control low voltage AC-motors ranging from 24V to 120V, 60A – 1000A for battery-powered vehicles and mobile machinery. SMI has historically developed itself into a market leader in the AGV/LGV-, Bus- and in large material handling equipment and special equipment applications in especially Europe.
With more than 25 years of experience, SMI can count numerous goals.
From the constitution, several inverter series were developed and placed on the market. The acquisition by Sauer-Danfoss in 2002 brought the PLUS+1® software concept into the inverter product line and SMI was thereby able to launch the current MI Plus+1® Series Inverter family.
In 2010 the inverter business became a standalone business under Sauer-Danfoss: a faster and more flexible structure, fully oriented to the specific business and technology needs. By 2013, Danfoss succeeded in acquiring the remaining shares of the business, which meant SMI became a 100% member of the Danfoss Group.
During the last three years, Schwarzmüller Inverter has grown its business significantly (over 70%). SMI has excelled in its customer oriented, support based application development and on its very rugged and wide product platform.
Johnnie Rask Jensen, General Manager of Schwarzmüller Inverter, said: “With the above decision, we believe that we are able to combine two companies, who both desire to grow in this exciting market. We will, combined, have the best application team in the market and a very strong product portfolio, which will only be stronger going forward. The “merger” also means a much more global reach for both SME group and SMI as the present overlap in regions is minimal”.
Alessandro Pace, CEO of SME Group, said: “We believe that SMI is an ideal fit for our business, as the two companies complement each other very well. SME group has a strong technology and product development focus. Marked once again by the recent launch of Synchronous Reluctance and Internal Permanent Magnet technology. SMI has a strong sales and application focus, marked by the significant growth of the business in the last years. The acquisition of SMI enables both SME group and Schwarzmüller Inverter to further strengthen our presence on the market and to completely become the right partner for your business“.
After 1st of July, SME Group will employ about 110 employees, spread over 4 locations in Italy, Germany, China and Canada.
Schwarzmüller Inverter will continue to work under the same brand, with the same team, and with the same products still headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Finally, Danfoss and the SME Group has entered into a long-term strategic agreement for the continued use of the PLUS+1® Kernel software and other PLUS+1® tools, so that customers will be able to benefit from the PLUS+1® performance and flexibility in the future.
In the long term, an even stronger product portfolio will come to light from this “merger” as both companies will benefit from larger sales and engineering teams.
This acquisition is an important milestone for the SME group and we believe will accelerate our strategic growth.
